Effecten van Hyperthermie Bij hyperthermie wordt door middel van (elektromagnetische) straling de temperatuur van het lichaam, in zijn geheel of op bepaalde plaatsen, verhoogd tot 40°C- 44°C. Dat heeft een aantal gevolgen: De doorbloeding van een tumor is doorgaans gebrekkig. Hierdoor is de effectiviteit van chemotherapie (lage concentratie van de medicijnen in de tumor) en bestraling (zuurstofarme omgeving) geringer dan gewenst. Hyperthermie verbetert de bloedcirculatie naar de tumor(en) en uitzaaiingen en verhoogt op de manier de effectiviteit van chemotherapie, hormoontherapie en bestraling. Hyperthermie verhoogt de concentratie van bepaalde eiwitten (HSP – Heat Shock Proteins). Deze eiwitten prikkelen het immuunsysteem om effectiever kankercellen aan te vallen en maken deze ook meer gevoelig voor de natuurlijke afweer van het lichaam. Het membraan van de kankercel wordt door de warmte weker (permeabiliteit) waardoor geneesmiddelen beter tot de tumor kunnen binnendringen. Door de warmte en de straling worden kankercellen gedood of raken beschadigd. Gezonde cellen worden juist niet aangetast, in tegenstelling tot andere vormen van bestraling (zoals röntgenstraling) waarbij ook gezonde cellen getroffen kunnen worden. Hyperthermie voorkomt dat beschadigd DNA van kankercellen (beschadigd door chemotherapie of bestraling) zich kan herstellen hierdoor maakt het de behandelingen effectiever.
